Exploring Cueva Ventana Puerto Rico: PR's Famous “Window Cave”

This post takes you on an inside look at Cueva Ventana Puerto Rico, the famous window cave.

Located near Arecibo, Cueva Ventana was one of the stops I was most curious about during my recent trip to Puerto Rico. The cave is best known for its huge natural “window” overlooking the Río Grande de Arecibo valley.

Our visit to Cueva Ventana included a guided walk through the property and caves, ending at the famous opening. Along the way, we learned a little about the area, saw plenty of bats and experienced a side of Puerto Rico completely different from our time in San Juan and along the coast.

We stopped at Cueva Ventana as part of a multi-stop excursion. Aventura Cueva Ventana operated the Cueva Ventana portion of our tour since they are the cave’s official tour operator.

If you’re thinking about adding Cueva Ventana to your Puerto Rico itinerary, here’s a look at our experience and what you should know before visiting.

Before the tour/hike, there is a short information and safety briefing about the property and cave system.
The tour opeartor provides protective helmets and flashlights, and the chance to take fun photos.
The caves are a short hike away, so wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes.
The terrain inside the caves is uneven and sometimes slippery.
You have to travel through some dark cave passages before reaching the main opening.
There are bats and other cave wildlife along the way.
You have to do a little climbing and maneuvering over rocks in certain areas, so some physical fitness is required.
Children under 3 years of age are NOT allowed to participate in the tour due to new insurance regulatory requirements.
The hike occurs in warm, humid conditions, so bring water and dress comfortably.
At the top of the hike you are greeted by the famous Cueva Ventana view overlooking the Río Grande de Arecibo valley at the end.
The tour offers plenty of time for photos and to take in your surroundings, especially once you reach the “window.”
The tour lasts a total of about 90 minutes.

Cueva Ventana in Puerto Rico is truly a worthwhile sight. If you are looking for an experience that is different from San Juan’s beaches, rainforests and water activities, this is it! Everyone in our group loved the tour and said the view was a highlight of our trip.
