Today’s post is a quick and easy recipe for bunuelos which are a fantastic, authentic Mexican treat or dessert. There are many iterations of bunuelos. Some are made of fried dough while some are made from fried cake. However, there’s another version of bunuelos made from flour tortillas and this is my preferred method for making bunuelos. Using flour tortillas makes this recipe super easy and keeps the prep and cooking time to minutes. Yes, literally minutes.
Bunelos can be served alongside a cup of coffee or be served with your favorite ice cream. Another great way to serve these is with a nice cup of seasonal fruits. They are so light and fluffy, you really don’t feel like you are eating a heavy dessert. But I caution you – bunuelos are addicting. I can literally eat the entire batch and like to nibble on them like a cookie.
Enough talk. Here’s my super easy recipe for bunuelos.
Bunuelos
Ingredients
- 4 extra-large burrito size flour tortillas
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 2 teaspoons of cinnamon I prefer Saigon cinnamon
- Vegetable Oil for frying
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon. Coat bottom of medium-sized frying pan with 1/4 inch of oil. Heat oil until hot (but not too hot or bunuelos will burn). Cut flour tortillas into small triangles. I like to use a cookie cutter in various shapes to make them look a little fancier. In small batches, fry the flour tortillas until they are golden brown. Remove from oil with a slotted spoon and transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to drain. While still warm, transfer to the bowl with the cinnamon and sugar mixture to coat and serve.
Enjoy and have a little fun with the upcoming Cinco de Mayo. Make an effort to celebrate the little things.
Im lucky…im down in Baja and here handmade flour tortillas are sold everywhere !! I simply buy those…fry them up..make that sugar mix and walahhhh !!!!
Would these be gross w/ whole-wheat tortillas? That’s all I have on hand. I’m guessing yes…
They should be fine! Give them a try 🙂
That sounds scrumptious. Very pretty. My favorite food from Mexico is fried Ice Cream : ).
Those look so delicious. What a great treat for Cinco de Mayo or Memorial Day!
Wow, why did I never think of this? It looks so yummy, and with ice cream – mmmmmm! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Your blog is making me fat.
It’s okay. I still love you anyway.
fried cake sounds AAAAH Mazing 🙂 would these be good with corn tortillas? I bought corn tortillas this week, no clue why. I made chips already but what else
No, please don’t use corn tortillas; the Bunuelos really need to be made with flour tortillas. They will taste completely different. To use those corn tortillas, consider making traditional tacos or even enchiladas!
These look absolutely delicious! My kiddos would be all over these. They love anything cinnamon and sugar:) Thanks for sharing the recipe!
You made these look so easy to make. I have never tried making them. Thanks for the recipe.
These are fun! My kids would love them. We make something similar for scooping up apple or strawberry salsa’s We bake them and just slice them in triangles – however I love your idea of shapes!! My kids will too!! Thanks!
Using cookie cutters make the Bunuelos look a little more fancy and really makes prep time a breeze.
Those look awesome! I have made them baked before but never in cute shapes. I have tons of cookie cutters – I’ll try that next time. Have you served them with fruit salsa before? That would be yummy!
Fruit salad does sound great! We REALLY like them with ice cream. That’s our favorite way 🙂
Yum! What a perfect little treat to make for potlucks too! Thanks for sharing.
