If you haven’t figured it out yet, I love to grill. I literally grill everything, including ingredients for my cocktails. For my latest creation, I decided to make a Citrus Cocktail with Grilled Fruit (oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes) for a fun, new flavor profile.
Grilling fruit releases the natural sugars from the fruit and completely changes the way the fruit tastes. The flavor is richer, deeper and smokier. I just can’t get enough of grilled fruit in the summer and grilled citrus is one of my favorites.
To begin, I sliced several different types of citrus. I then prepped my grill (it was raining so I used an indoor grill) with coconut oil. I then heated the grill to medium-high heat and grilled the fruit. I sprinkled the fruit with a cinnamon-sugar mix to further add flavor to the fruit.
Once the fruit was grilled on both sides and ready I placed the fruit slices into a large cocktail shaker.
With a muddler I broke down the grilled fruit to release the juices.
I then strained the fruit into another cocktail shaker and added the rest of the ingredients. To complete the cocktail you will also need:
- 6 ounces of orange juice
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 tablespoon liquid sugar or simple syrup
- 1.5 ounces of orange-vanilla vodka (I used Voli vodka)
After shaking the cocktail rigorously I poured the mixture into already rimmed glasses (with a cinnamon-sugar mixture). This recipe makes two drinks.
The Citrus Cocktail with Grilled Fruit was rich and savory and full of warm vanilla-citrus flavor thanks to a combination of the flavored Voli orange-vanilla vodka and the grilled fruit.
Keep your entertaining completely outdoor this summer and take your cocktails from the bar to the grill.
The next time your grill is on, why not throw on some citrus and make your very own Citrus Cocktail with Grilled Fruit? Don’t forget to add a twist!
