Malt Monday Beer Review of the Week: Victory Summer Love Ale
Style: Pale Ale
Alcohol by Volume (ABV): 5.2%
Summer Lovin’ with Victory’s Summer Love Ale
When I saw this beer at my local liquor store I was immediately inspired. Th fun beer bottle label and it’s suggestion of being the “Flavor of the Season,” I knew I definitely had to give this baby a try. Aside from being one of Pennsylvania’s most popular breweries, the beer also features the iconic Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation’s “With Love, Philadelphia XOXO” tag-line which appears on billboards all over the Philadelphia area.
Brewed locally in Chester County, PA, Victory Summer Love Ale returns for a third year. According to the brewers, this “specific style of beer was chosen because it has a broad appeal and will be accessible for casual beer drinkers, but will still retain exciting hop notes.” Made with ale malts, German hops and Brandywine Creek water, the beer is certainly a pale ale. Summer Love Ale holds those true pale ale characteristics with its pale colors and crisp malt taste. If you are partial to pale ales, the dryness of the hops could be quite appealing on a hot summer day.
Initially released in 2010 to the local market, due to its popularity distribution was expanded to 29 states nationwide in 2011. Paste Magazine recently ranked Summer Love Ale #1 in a blind tasting of summer beers.
While I can certainly understand it’s appeal and think it is highly drinkable, I didn’t actually enjoy Victory Summer Love Ale. It was one of those beers that was just OK. I wouldn’t see myself reaching for another by choice but I wouldn’t necessarily pass one up if offered to me. Now, keep in mind I am partial to dark, heavier beers and lagers.
This one was decent, but certainly not my style. As much as it hurts me, given my affection for all things local, I have to give Victory Summer Love Ale as PASS.
