Famosa Lager Beer is Guatemala’s most famous beer. This pale lager is known as Cerveza Gallo in parts outside of the United States.
Famosa is your classic Latin American beer – pale, light and slightly watery. While I can appreciate its crisp taste and think it would be refreshing on a hot summer day, I found Famosa to be extremely bitter, with the bitterness increasing as the beer got warmer. I could not gather any distinct flavors and whatever flavors it did have, well they were immediately overwhelmed by the strong aftertaste. This beer was overly hoppy and rather boring – pretty much unmemorable. I did not try this beer with food, although I don’t think it would help much.
I was surprised to read that this is Guatemala’s most famous beer. Makes me want to reconsider my next trip to Guatemala — I’m hesitant to visit somewhere that ranks this beer as their most famous (yuck!). I traditionally love Latin beers but this one was a great disappointment.
