Happy National Lager Day!
I wish I had a lager to share with you for this week’s Malt Monday but I don’t. Epic fail on my part, I know.
In keeping with my holiday themed beer to coincide with the season I bring Smuttynose Winter Ale to you for this week’s review. I was attracted to this beer’s name and the fun, retro pic which appears on the beer’s label. I had never heard of this brand before which surprised me given its wide availability throughout the East Coast.
Smuttynose Brewing Company is based out of New Hampshire. It’s Winter Ale is a brown, amber beer with fruity flavors complimented by an undertone of cherry and surprisingly without seasonal spices. I poured this beer into a glass. When it poured the beer produced a nice foam, which didn’t keep and quickly dissolved. The color of the beer was a reddish-brown and was very light in consistency. First sip was a little tart but each sipped improved and produced a slight, warming feeling.
This beer was borderline. Part of me drank it and said to myself, “so what.” It isn’t the worst beer I have ever consumed but it was a little boring. I don’t think I will drink one of these again. I would much rather invest in a beer I enjoyed than drink one that is so-so.
This week’s Malt Monday review is a GGG pass. Sorry Smuttynose!
Bah humbug.
