Whew! I have been so busy lately I haven’t had time to hit the liquor stores and find some new beers. For this week’s Malt Monday beer review of the week I had to dive into the back of my refrigerator to see what I could find. After a little digging my little hands landed on a Magic Hat Seance Saison Beer. Now don’t hate me too much because this is likely a summer leftover, as the Magic Hat Seance Saison Beer is typically offered during the late summer/early fall months, and may be a little hard to find around the time of the year.
I love a good Saison so I found the Magic Hat Seance Saison Beer interesting and that is interesting in not the best of ways. The beer poured a beautiful coffee color with a nice mocha colored foam. As a lover of dark beers I eagerly anticipated my first sip to find myself grossly disappointed. The beer has a sour, flowery flavor with a bitter, lingering aftertaste. Now, one should note Magic Hat has been struggling the past few years with multiple changes in ownership. One can guess that the inconsistent leadership is compromising the branding and vision of the beer. The taste just wasn’t there which leaves me to also wonder if there are issues with the brewmasters as well.
I’d be willing to overlook it if it was marketed as a saison, which I have come to expect high things from, but this just leaves me feeling a little blah. Sorry, I just can’t give this one a thumbs up. Magic Hat Seance Saison Beer is a pass.
