Piggy-backing on my last Malt Monday Beer Review, it’s week two of the mystery bag and this week, we are reviewing Coney Island Albino Python.
Coney Island Albino Python, made by Schmaltz Brewing Company, is a unique beer in many ways. One: a portion of the proceeds help Coney Island, USA, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit fulfill its mission to defend the honor of lost forms of American popular arts and culture, leading the renaissance in Brooklyn’s historic Coney Island neighborhood.
Two: the company’s description of the beer is, well, a little interesting. “White Lager Brewed With Spices. Schmaltz Brewing Company reveals a most charming attraction: the sensual dance of provocative hops and spices entwined with a sumptuous and elegant malt body. Taste the rapture. Surrender to temptation. Seduce and be seduced.”
And, three: the brewery’s choice of artwork for the bottles. They have some funky labels adorning their brews. I do love a good beer label so this one worked for me.
What didn’t work for me was the actual beer itself. Coney Island Albino Python is an orange-amber colored beer with a thin, almost watery white head. At first sip, I tasted ginger and maybe even some licorice, which was likely fennel. The aftertaste was strong and punchy and it had a medium carbonation. I found the beer to be overly fragrant and a bit too fruity and spicy for my taste.
I was surprised to learn this beer was a Gold Medal Winner at the World Beer Championships. In my opinion, it really wasn’t anything to brag about and I found myself not wanting to finish the beer. I was terribly underwhelmed.
I’d be interested to sample other selections from Schmaltz Brewing Company to see what else this brewery has to offer, although my first impression isn’t terribly positive. Something tells me there is more to Schmaltz Brewing Company than what I’ve tasted.
Coney Island Albino Python is a GGG pass.
