We enjoyed our first snow storm of the season this week. Well, sort of. The weathermen and women were calling for a storm of epic proportions, the Governor called a State of Emergency and schools were closed before the first snow flake even hit the ground. We waited, we hunkered down and we were disappointed. Nothing happened. Well, sort of. Only two modest inches fell to the ground.

Even in the midst of winter I have remained true to my grilling roots. I am an “Evergriller.” I pride myself on being the kind of gal who grills year-round so I was thrilled to learn about the new Kraft Barbecue Sauces. This January, Kraft Barbecue Sauce is celebrating the launch of a newly revamped line of sauces with recipes that feature high-quality ingredients like tomatoes, sweet molasses, cider vinegar and cane sugar. In addition, the sauces will be in a new package design. New Kraft Barbecue Sauce is available in eight varieties across smoky, sweet and spicy flavors: Original, Hickory Smoke, Sweet Honey, Mesquite Smoke, Sweet Brown Sugar, Sweet & Spicy, Spicy Honey, and Thick & Spicy. Kraft Barbecue Sauce is sold at retailers nationwide at a suggested retail price of $1.99 per 18-ounce bottle. Select flavors are also available in 28, 40, and 82.5-ounce varieties.

IMG_0928To celebrate the new Kraft Barbecue Sauces, the brand created custom, over-the-top grilling innovations to help America’s well-known grilling gurus, “Evergrillers,” endure the outdoor elements when they grill year-round. The Evergriller Grill ‘N’ Flip Mitt was created to inspire Evergrillers to develop new winter grilling traditions just in time for the big game.

The new Kraft Barbecue Sauces inspired me to head to the grill – even in the snow – to make some Spiraled Grilled Sausage with Barbecue Sauce. I just love the flavor combination of sausages and barbecue sauce and ever since seeing a spiraled hot dog video on YouTube I have been completely obsessed. Not only does spiraling make the basic sausage or hot dog more exciting, it also allows for more grilling flavor to penetrate the sausage and bring that smoky grilled flavor out.

Before cutting or grilling the sausage you will want to boil the sausage in a shallow pan for about 5 minutes. This will make the sausage easier to spiral.

To spiral the sausage you will want to thread a skewer through the sausage. Then, you hold your knife at an angle and roll it away from you under the knife cutting all the way down to the skewer.

Once the sausage is cut you will want to keep it on the skewer, place it on a hot grill and brush the sausage with your favorite barbecue sauce flavor and cook until sausage is browned with a nice grill char.

To serve, place the spiraled sausage with barbecue sauce in a warm bun and serve alongside your favorite sausage toppings. I like to serve my spiraled sausages with chopped red onions and chopped tomatoes.

Spiraled Grilled Sausage with Barbecue Sauce #Evergriller

A delicious way to serve up grilled sausages
Prep Time20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 6 3.5 ounce links Italian sausage
  • 4-1/2 cups water
  • 3 pinches salt
  • 6 metal skewers
  • 3 tablespoons barbecue sauce or to taste
  • Chopped tomatoes
  • Chopped onions
  • Hot Dog Buns

Instructions

  • Place sausages into a skillet over medium heat and pour in water. Add a large pinch of salt to the water and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook for about 3 minutes per side.
  • Remove sausages from pan and let cool to room temperature.
  • Thread a metal skewer through each cooled sausage so the sausage is pierced by the skewer lengthwise .
  • Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat and lightly oil the grate.
  • Pour barbecue sauce into a small bowl and set aside. Grab a pastry brush.
  • Place a sausage on cutting board and make a knife cut about 1 inch from the end, holding the knife blade at a slight angle and cutting down to the skewer. Slowly rotate the sausage and continue cutting in a spiral until sausage is cut to about 1 inch from the other end.
  • Gently spread the sausage apart on the skewer. This will create a1/2 inch of space between the spiral and allow of the sauce to drip into every spiral space.
  • Place sausages onto the preheated grill and cook until browned, about 6 minutes on each side.
  • Brush sausages with barbecue sauce using a pastry brush when sausages are nearly done. Cook, until sauce has caramelized onto the sausage and the sausage has slight char markings.
  • Transfer to a plate and let sausages cool for about 30 seconds before removing skewers for serving. Serve on bun with garnishes.
