kid friendly egg in a hole

Sunday mornings are made for delicious breakfasts. As a working mommy of two, I have a hard time making breakfast during the school/work week and live for the weekends so I can take my time making breakfasts and have a little fun in the kitchen. For this week’s Mini Chef Mondays I am sharing one of our favorites, kid friendly egg in a hole.

This weekend we had a visiting mini chef! My nephew, Trevor, spent the night at our house. My boys just gush over their older cousin and he easily fits right into our crazy, little crew. We just love him and the fact that he is a little foodie – and doesn’t mind jumping into the kitchen with us – makes him perfect for Mini Chef Mondays.

Kid friendly egg in a hole, also known as eggs in a basket, is such a great, little breakfast. Quick and simple to prepare, but unique enough to make breakfast feel a little special.

To begin, we put some slices of bread (we used whole grain white) on a cookie sheet and used the rim of a mason jar to create holes in the bread (you could also use a cookie cutter or a biscuit cutter to make the whole where the egg will cook).

We applied some gentle pressure to the jar to cut a whole in the bread.

And continued until we had enough slices of bread with holes.

Trevor even got into the action and helped out.

We then heated a large frying pan over medium heat and added several pats of butter to the pan until it melted. Once the butter was melted we added two slices of bread to the pan (our pan was not super huge) and  let it brown for one minute on the first side before adding the egg.

After a minute, we cracked one egg into each of the bread slices and topped the egg with a sprinkling of salt.

The eggs cooked for about two minutes before flipping the bread and egg to cook the other side. We like the inside of the egg a little runny so we did not break the yolk. If you do not like a runny egg, break the yolk.

The finished dish should look something like this. We like to serve our kid friendly egg in a hole with bacon or sausage and some fresh fruit.

Ingredients

  • 1 slice of bread white, wheat, whole grain – we used whole grain white
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Cut a 2-inch round from the center of the bread. Melt the butter in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Place the slice of bread in the pan and toast lightly, about 1 minute. Crack the egg into the hole and season with salt and cook until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Add more butter as needed to crisp the bread. Flip the egg, season with salt and pepper. Cook another 2 minutes for a runny yolk, or slightly longer for a set egg. Serve hot.

Notes

Reserve the round cut from the center of the bread and cook it with the egg in a hole and use as a dipper.
