Opening on May 30, 2013 for a limited engagement, Cirque du Soleil TOTEM debuts on Camden’s Waterfront Across the river from Philadelphia. Just recently, I had the chance to chat with TOTEM publicist Francis Jalbert and learn a little bit more about the show and what ticket holders can expect from Cirque du Soleil TOTEM.
GGG: “Francis, thanks so much for speaking with me today. I am really excited about Cirque du Soleil TOTEM coming to the southern New Jersey / Philadelphia area. I had a chance to see my first Cirque de Soleil show in 2003 and have not forgotten it since. Tell me, how would you describe the TOTEM show?”
FJ: “TOTEM will take you on a journey through the evolution of mankind. You will see everything from the amphibious stage to the ape to modern man. The show takes you through different views of evolution, not exactly in chronological order. After seeing this show, people may have a very positive view of mankind, earth and human beings”
GGG: “What kinds of costumes and music can we expect?”
FJ: “This show transforms you to an imaginary world. The costumes are inspired by elements of nature. You will see things like feathers and leaves on the costumes and the music has a lot of tribal influences. The set itself was inspired by a turtle and was designed to look like a marsh. There will be images projected on large screens behind the performers. The images will include the waters of Argentina and waterfalls from Iceland. It’s almost as if we are giving a set of crayons to the audience and letting them dream, imagine and create for two hours.”
GGG: “How is the show different from other Cirque du Soleil shows?
FJ: “All Cirque du Soleil shows are unique and they always start with a white page. TOTEM is the first show to use extensive video content. Also, the theme of the show, evolution, is very different because this theme allows the show to have a realistic element, based in reality and various cultures. The main focus of the show is the acrobatics. There are 11 acts and some of the routines have never been seen on a Cirque stage before. This show takes acrobatics to a whole new level artistically and acrobatically.”
GGG: “Where has the show appeared so far and where is it headed next?”
FJ: “TOTEM has been on the road since April 2010 and has made appearances in various parts of the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. After our Philadelphia debut, TOTEM will appear in Ottawa, ON Columbus, OH and Long Beach, CA. After touring, the show will move to an arena and will continue. Each Cirque du Soleil show goes on for about 15 years.”
GGG: “I am so excited to see the show. If you had to pick, what would you choose as your most favorite part.”
FJ: “That is like asking me to choose a favorite child! If I had to choose, I would say the beginning. The show starts right away and builds from there. This show offers everything – humor, excitement and entertainment for everyone. The cast of TOTEM comprises 52 performing artists from 19 countries. There is literally something every member of your family will enjoy.”
GGG: “Francis, thank you for taking the time to chat with me today. The show sounds fantastic and I am so excited for its opening.”
FJ: “It’s my pleasure. Looking forward to our debut under the blue and yellow big top on Camden’s Waterfront. Hope you enjoy the show.”
