Today’s 31 Day March Blog Challenge prompt is to talk about the last book I read. The last book I read was Guts: The Endless Follies and Tiny Triumphs by Kristen Johnston. Yes, that Kristen Johnston from that odd alien television show from the 90′s, 3rd Rock from the Sun.
I picked up this book on a whim, while perusing the shelves at a local book sale. I thought the image on the cover was interesting and I enjoy a occassional memoir, so I picked it up. I am not a Kristen Johnson fan, although I remember her cameo on Sex and the City as an aging party girl, and I was not a 3rd Rock from the Sun fan (at all), but the reviews looked positive and I needed a book to read for my trip to Europe.
Originally, I thought the “Guts” reference in the title referenced one’s bravery and fearlessness, but actually it was about your guts, as in intestines. In Kristen’s case, her guts exploded as a result of a long history of drug and alcohol abuse which landed her in a London hospital, recovering from something she never should have survived.
The book is a story of recovery and awakening. Riveting at times, Kristen’s writes about her addiction from a very honest place and then makes fun of her experiences in a way only a comedic actress can. I read the book in about three sittings and found myself very engaged and interested in the book’s outcome and its characters.
While I normally do not review books on Giggles, Gobbles and Gulps, I will say I really enjoyed this book. It was a different type of book for me – I don’t normally read memoirs from recovering drug addicts, but in this case the book worked for me.
Kristen Johnson’s Guts…is GGG approved and it was the last book I read. This completes my 31 Day March Blog Challenge post for the day.

I will have to look into this book. I like to read about how others have over come their addictions…

Ooooh, that sounds really good! I’ll have to pick it up!
Sounds like it’s worth checking out.
I had heard that it was a great story. Maybe I will line it up for a summer read. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it.
This looks like a good I would love to read.
